When you’re writing a novel, and it’s another journey, memory flashes and comes to lend a hand and give you manners and sights and regions and landscapes that you wouldn’t remember if you didn’t start writing.

Q: In fact, you’re constantly referring to the trip. The trip is hinted at as salvation, but at the same time, Sandra’s travels seem like an escape from herself. Is travel a way to get closer to oneself or a process of returning home?

R was found. Travel, sex, friendship or knowledge has given me almost everything. I don’t understand life without travel, without the joy of discovery, without curiosity. Literature corrects life and much like literature corrects travel, which also corrects routine and that is why it nourishes us so much.

My imaginative logic responds to this dream by giving continuity to the universe of my novels, the fantasy of creating a human comedy, so that all novels form part of one and the dialogue. This is why scenarios, characters, and Valdecádiar are so repetitive. I come from that generation of readers who thought we were Macondo and Komala and Santa Maria, fictional regions more real than some real places. Literature succeeds in imbuing truth with fiction, endowing the most terrible with beauty. Valdecádiar is a beautiful counterpoint to the city.
