Why I decided to install (and control) my own home alarm. This is my experience | your technology | Country

Over the past year, there have been more than 86,000 home burglaries in Spain, according to the data of the crime balance provided by the Ministry of the Interior in the last quarter of 2022. This is a figure that represents an increase of 14.3% compared to 2021. So there are many users who take advantage The opportunity to contract, before the summer holidays, an alarm in the house that gives them peace of mind when they’re not there. But not everyone wants to be locked into a contract for a monthly fee to monitor their home, and traditional security companies aren’t the only option: there are already several tech companies that have designed similar systems, in terms of components, that are easily installed and can be controlled from a mobile phone, and also don’t require Additional subscription: Xiaomi, Eufy Security, Somfy or Ring. It is the alarm set of this last brand that we tested, to check if these products are a real replacement, how is the installation and what options does it offer.

Most of these combos, and Ring’s is no exception, are scalable. That is, there are kits that contain a certain number of components that can later be expanded with more sensors and devices to adapt to the needs of each home. The device I tried consisted of five pieces (base station, keypad, contact sensor, motion detector, and range extender), to which I added a camera.

The first step to installing it is to download the Ring app and create an account. The process involves entering your name, location, email address, and password. After this point, a control panel appears in which devices can be added one by one. It’s very simple and everything is explained in detail step by step: it takes no more than 10 minutes.

Next, it’s time to put all the components in their final location: the base station, which acts as the center of the system and includes a powerful alarm clock, you’ve placed it on a piece of furniture and it’s Wi-Fi connected to your home network (this can also be done by cable); The keypad, which facilitates the connection and disconnection of the alarm without having to resort to the mobile phone, next to the entrance door, in the hall (there is also the option of placing it on the wall); the contact sensor on the balcony door to notify me if it’s been opened (included with the adhesive it includes); motion detector in the hall, also attached to the wall; Range extender connected to a socket in the same space, to improve communication between different devices; The camera is on a piece of furniture in the living room, which is a corridor to the rooms. Both the base station and the camera, as well as the extender, work connected to the mains; The rest of the components go to the batteries.

It has three modes of use. The first of them is demilitarizedWhich, as its name indicates, is the one that activates when we are at home. On exit, it changes to Outside, by pressing a shortcut in the app or on the keyboard: when you do this, there is one minute to exit before the alarms go off. In this case, you can see the live image from the camera at any time from the application, check that all devices are active, check the event log, and so on. There is a third way a house, which keeps the door and window sensors active even when you’re inside. But, personally, I didn’t find it very useful and didn’t use it.

One more detail: the control of the application is not limited to one person: it is possible to grant permissions to others (using their access tokens) to manage the device themselves.

Open the door, the window…

Once the kit is installed and its three modes tested, what exactly does this solution allow? Basically, if it detects any movement or opening of the door or window in which the sensors are installed, a notification will reach the mobile phone (in real time) warning of the incident. And if the alarm is not deactivated in a few seconds, from the app or through the digital code on the door keypad, the siren starts beeping. The sound is loud enough to alert neighbors if the house is in a building.

Having tried this combination for weeks and having in the past contracted on alarm with a provider for this type of service, I can confirm that I am fully satisfied with this other solution, both direct and private, and will not be going behind. The components are very similar and the biggest difference is that if there is any problem, before I receive a call telling me the situation; Now I can see for myself and take appropriate action.

Also, one aspect I really liked was that if the power went out while the security system was working, it wouldn’t turn off. A notification arrives informing you of the event and that the alarm is triggered by an emergency power system, giving enough margin (24 hours) to check what is happening and contact the police if necessary.
