Chips (semiconductors) are used to calculate what the neurons of the human body are: the basic functional units of the system whose main task is to receive, process and transmit information. Their development depends on whether applications can be increasingly sophisticated, linked devices work and communicate, or artificial intelligence that brings the device closer to the human brain can manage, digest the growing amount of data stored, or receive and reproduce images. It looks realistic and more defined. Each advance in these integrated circuits drives the rest of the industry to develop new capabilities for mobile phones, cars, home appliances, computers, and any kind of machinery.

The multinational company Qualcomm in November (at an event to which EL PAÍS and more international media were invited) presented its latest generation of chips, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, designed to process with artificial intelligence, doubling the performance by four and reducing up to 60% of power consumption. These are the three basic lines that are also followed by other companies such as Intel, Samsung, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) or Apple, which launched in June to develop their own family of chips (M2) for the Mac in order to stop relying on third parties. Here are some of the developments that are enabling new advances for Qualcomm:

Healer. “Mobile has changed our lives. It is everything we do and it takes technology anywhere, ”says Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon, who believes that the next five years will be oriented towards technological convergence, to provide mobile technologies to other devices and to the smartphone with advantages computers and consoles. For this purpose, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 platform has been developed, which companies such as Samsung, Honor, OnePlus, Sony, Xiaomi or Motorola will integrate into their top-end devices starting next year. Founded by a four nanometer processor (more efficient and capable); two main cores with a maximum frequency of 3.2 GHz, three out of 2.8 and four out of 2; And enable 5G networks, 10Gbps downloads, and maximum performance with Wi-Fi 7, the latest wireless connectivity technology. “It delivers innovative AI, unparalleled connectivity and pro-gaming capability as users demand more and more,” says Chris Patrick, corporate vice president.

Glasses that aspire to take off the watch. “They will be the next wearable device,” Amon emphatically asserts. These are traditional looking glasses (no helmets isolate the environment) and all mobile applications will take a few millimeters from the eye. Directions to a place, a video call, the latest messages, information related to what we see, a movie, or our world in the metaverse will be reflected in a portion of the crystals. Amon believes they will start to become available in the next “five to ten years”. “From a technological point of view, this is quite possible. It’s only a matter of time and they will be inseparable companions, ”he assures.

The basis for this near future is the Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1, a multi-chip architecture consisting of an augmented reality processor in one temple, an augmented reality processor located in the middle of the frame, and a docking plate in the other temple. It uses the FastConnect 7800. This new layout allows elements to use up to nine cameras, increase AI performance by 2.5 times, reduce power consumption by 50%, and most importantly, fit the entire device into cups of the traditional size and look.

language. The AI engine has also allowed the development of Snapdragon Smart, a natural language processing system that facilitates simultaneous translation into several languages, or Sensing Hub, which allows the integration of increasingly complex parameters for voice assistant commands. The request “Find a restaurant or hotel near here” becomes “Locate a place with Chinese food for less than €20 in less than 10 minutes” or “A four-star hotel with gym, babysitting service and close to the beach that costs less than €200” euros per night.

Instant photoshop. Govind Balakrishnan, Vice President of Adobe believes, “Content design should be for everyone because everyone is a creator.” Adobe is partnering with Qualcomm to develop Snapdragon Sight, a platform that aims to bring the professional photography experience to mobile cameras. In this way, the development allows real-time “semantic segmentation” of images and videos. Like the popular Photoshop, this enhancement identifies the different layers of an image, such as faces, features, hair, clothes, sky, or background, to enhance them by applying artificial intelligence at the same time the photo is taken. “The camera knows what it sees,” explains Judd Heap, corporate vice president and product manager.

Companies like Sony or Samsung also apply Qualcomm’s system to their image sensors for up to 200MP snapshots and HD video with the latest resolution (8k) protocols.

the game. Faster execution (25%), more realism and lower consumption (40%) are the keys to Snapdragon Elite Gaming, development based on the new processing platform that allows realistic characters and light processing (ray tracing) for mobile gaming without compromising battery performance. Game development company Niantic has already announced that it will integrate this technology.

Contact. The new processing platform is born already linked to 5G (mobile connectivity) and the latest generation of wireless connectivity (Wifi 7) thanks to the X70 modem to gain speed, capacity, coverage, latency and energy efficiency. It also doubles the range of Bluetooth connectivity and allows the simultaneous use of two DSDA (Dual-SIM Dual-Active) SIM cards.

It seems. It is one of the bets of new developments: improving the experience of music, calls, video and gaming applications. Not only does it increase clarity and immersiveness, but artificial intelligence also makes it possible to distinguish and cancel out, for example, any source of noise outside the interlocutors during a conversation.

Computers. Technological convergence does not only mean the advancement of smartphones. The goal is to bring mobile technology to all devices, especially laptops, and machines, such as cars. “Our vision is to bring the best of the smartphone to the laptop with improvements in programming, hardware [elementos físicos o materiales]connectivity and processing power,” explains Kedar Kondap, Vice President of Computing and Games.

In this sense, the Qualcomm and Microsoft collaboration will allow the integration of artificial intelligence acceleration systems for Windows 11 users not only to improve photo and sound applications (Windows Studio Effects Voice Focus and Background Blur) but, above all, to benefit from developments. in artificial intelligence to improve the performance and energy efficiency of CPUs (Central Processing Units) and GPUs (Graphics Processing Units).
