Nemanja Matic, Manchester United (MU) star, is certain to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season. This news was conveyed directly by the player through his Instagram upload on Friday (15/4/2022).
According to Metro, Matic first joined the Red Devils in 2017. He joined from Chelsea in a £32 million deal, and has made a total of 183 appearances under Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Michael Carrick and Ralf Rangnick.
United have just chosen Erik ten Hag, to occupy the Red Devils hot seat starting next season. However, the arrival of the Ajax boss apparently marked the end of Matic’s career with the Premier League giants. In fact, the Serbia international’s contract at Old Trafford will still last until the summer of 2023.
“After much thought, I decided that this season would be my last season with Manchester United. I have informed my decision to the board, manager and players,” Matic wrote in the caption.
“It is a great honor for me to play for this great club. Many thanks to the fans for the constant support. Now I will give everything until the end of the season to help my team-mates finish in a strong position.”
Manchester Evening News assesses the departure of Matic will add to the poor performance of the Red Devils in midfield. However, MU seems to have a backup plan. The Old Trafford club are intent on hijacking Kalvin Phillips from Leeds United, but will wait for the next move until Erik ten Hag’s official appointment.
Matic is unlikely to be the only player to leave Manchester United at the end of the season. A number of other players such as Jesse Lingard, Edinson Cavani, and Paul Pogba are also reportedly approaching the end of their contract with Manchester United.
Citing Metro reports, Pogba has yet to seal a new contract with the Red Devils. The French player even called his career at Manchester United less than satisfactory. He bluntly admitted that he wanted to join a team capable of winning trophies.
“You have to be honest, the last five seasons (in my career) have been unsatisfactory – not at all. This year is dead, we won’t win anything. I want to win trophies, whether it’s with Manchester United or another club,” Pogba said last month.
French giants, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are claimed to be the leading club that has the potential to get Pogba’s services. FootMercato said Paul Pogba had a meeting with PSG’s sporting director, Leonardo. His family also seems pleased with the player’s potential move to the French capital.
United have not yet announced the appointment of Erik ten Hag. Even so, Ten Hag’s move to Old Trafford is believed to be only a matter of time. British media also flocked to report that MU had reached an agreement with the manager and Ajax.
The club, which is currently being managed by Ralf Rangnick, will reportedly wait until next week to officially announce its decision. This is done in honor of the Ajax squad who are preparing for the important match against PSV Eindhoven
Ten Hag previously competed with Mauricio Pochettino for the new permanent manager position at United. The Red Devils finally made their choice on Ten Hag because they were impressed by the bald man’s outspoken attitude when interviewed by club officials.
Ten Hag did not hesitate to highlight the Red Devil’s habit of buying top players, which led to failure. MU is known to have spent more than 1 billion pounds in the last nine years, without being able to win the Premier League title or Champions League.
Initially, MU officials needed a few days to digest what Ten Hag said. However, after concluding carefully, the MU side became very impressed with Ten Hag’s honest assessment of the club’s condition. They are also happy with Ten Hag’s vision for United.
