Manchester United Want Frenkie de Jong's Contract

Manchester United have officially appointed Erik ten Hag as new permanent manager starting next season. The bald-headed man was given a three-year contract, which will see him in charge of the Red Devils squad until June 2025.

The move to Old Trafford marks the start of Ten Hag’s tough stint as Manchester United manager. The reason is, he came when the Red Devils were in a bad situation. MU is recorded to have experienced a title fast for five years. They were also knocked down to sixth in the Premier League standings for the 2021/2022 season.

Ten Hag is now trusted to carry out a major overhaul of the Red Devils squad. The Mirror report claims the Ajax Amsterdam boss has identified Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong as one of his main targets for the summer.

De Jong’s recruitment plan could have a bad impact on Harry Maguire. The reason is that the 24-year-old player is predicted to be the leader of the Ten Hag revolution at Old Trafford. As for Maguire, he still holds the title as Manchester United captain. However, the decline in his performance this season has made Maguire start to be in the spotlight.

The news said, his team-mates at MU also began to question Maguire’s position in the squad. The player was constantly given chances by former manager Ole Gunnar Solskajer and interim coach Ralf Rangnick. In fact, he often performs below the standard.

Maguire also spoke up responding to negative views about him. The England international did not deny he had shown poor performances in a number of matches. However, Maguire believes both managers have a special reason why they start him every game.

“This season, I’ve had some bad games. However, I will not play as Manchester United’s starting eleven, if I (always) play badly or not well in every game,” said Maguire some time ago, as reported by the Mirror.

“There is a reason why the two managers (Solskjaer and Rangnick) put me in the starting eleven in every game. However, I also understand that I am the captain of this team. I spent a lot of money. When things don’t go well and we concede too many goals, I will be criticized.

Reports in Spain claim Ten Hag is ready to make a breakthrough by appointing De Jong as project leader in England. The Dutch coach has been provided with £210 million or equivalent to approximately Rp. 3.9 trillion by the club to spend in the summer.

Furthermore, De Jong’s transfer will also be a reunion between the player and Erik ten Hag. The two are known to have worked together when De Jong was still wearing the Ajax Amsterdam uniform.

Sport says De Jong is targeted to be part of Manchester United’s midfield starting next season. In line with this, the Daily Mail assesses that the midfield will indeed be Ten Hag’s top priority in the transfer window, considering that Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba are expected to leave in the near future.

Matic has reportedly confirmed his intention to leave Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Pogba is also said to have played his final match with MU, when the Red Devils were massacred 0–4 by Liverpool in the Premier League.

Frenkie de Jong made a move from Ajax to Barcelona in 2019 in a deal worth around £65 million. The Netherlands international has been a regular for Barca this season, and has scored four goals and provided five assists in a total of 42 appearances in all competitions.

Blaugrana manager Xavi Hernandez even praised De Jong in February. He said the 24-year-old midfielder is happy at Camp Nou and will stay for a long time with Barcelona.

“For me, Frenkie is a great player. I think he has taken a step forward since we arrived. He is a different (and) more dynamic player,” said the Barcelona legend, as quoted by the Daily Mail.

“He felt uncomfortable with his calf, so he couldn’t play well in the Supercopa (match) against Real Madrid. Now, he looks comfortable. He doesn’t lose the ball, he helps defence, gets into the box (penalties) and scores goals. He is a player who will stay at Barca for many years,” Xavi added
