Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Ajax head coach Erik ten Hag as their new manager from the start of next season.

The Athletic revealed on April 12 that United had reached an agreement with Ten Hag.

It is understood United reached an agreement with Ten Hag outside of, and separate to, the release clause in his Ajax contract. The Dutchman has signed a three-year contract with the option for an additional year.

Ten Hag will replace Ralf Rangnick, who has been working at United in an interim capacity since former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked by the club in November.

Ten Hag wants to bring assistant manager Mitchell van der Gaag with him from Ajax, The Athletic understands.

Van der Sar on Ten Hag’s departure
Edwin van der Sar: “Four and a half years is a good amount of time, but we would have liked to have kept Erik at Ajax for longer. He is going to make the step to one of the biggest clubs in the world, in a fantastic league.”

“We owe Erik a lot of thanks for what he has achieved with Ajax so far, but we are not done yet. At the end of the season, I will look back more extensively on his departure. For now, what matters is the final games of the season in which we all want to bring home the league title.”

Man United’s players show a crushing level of underdevelopment – Ten Hag will need to fix that
“No one knows how long United’s rebuild will take because it’s impossible to tell precisely how good — or bad — this squad is. In an age of strong opinions, faux certainty and knee-jerk reactions, everyone seems entirely sure whether Scott McTominay or Aaron Wan-Bissaka or Marcus Rashford or Fred can play a vital part in United’s future.

“But assessing footballers individually is difficult without considering the wider context.”

Michael Cox takes a look at the challenge awaiting Ten Hag.

News: Police conduct sweep of Harry Maguire’s house after Manchester United captain was targeted by bomb threat
Police have carried out a sweep of Harry Maguire’s house after he was targeted with a bomb threat.

The threat was taken seriously by the player, who reported it to the Cheshire Constabulary. Police then conducted a sweep of his home on Thursday afternoon.

Maguire, the Manchester United captain, lives with his fiance Fern Hawkins and their two young children.

A spokesman for Harry Maguire said: “In the last 24 hours, Harry has received a serious threat to his family home.

“He has reported this to the police who are now looking into the matter. The safety of his family and those around him is obviously Harry’s number one priority.

“He will continue to prepare for this weekend’s fixture as normal and we will not be commenting in any further detail at this time.”
