Manchester City vs Liverpool FINAL SCORE: 2-2
This is the very beginning of our Manchester City vs Liverpool live blog, as we bring you all the updates from this Sunday evening meeting at the Etihad Stadium.
Full time: Spoils shared in an epic Manchester City vs Liverpool
The spoils are shared and Manchester City maintain their lead of just one point at the top of the table. It was an incredible encounter that produced first half goals from Kevin de Bruyne, Diogo Jota and Gabriel Jesus to give City a 2-1 half time lead. But, Sadio Mane made it 2-2 in the first minute of the second half. That proved to be the final scoreline, but certainly not because of a lack of chances.
Minute 90+3: Mahrez has a chance to win it… and chips over!
Manchester City manage to launch a counter attack in the final minute of stoppage time and Mahrez is able to work a shooting chance, but he chips it over the crossbar to mean this will finish 2-2.
Minute 89: Off the post from Mahrez!
Manchester City win a freekick and it’s quite deep, but substitute Riyad Mahrez wants to try his luck from distance. And, he strikes the post! In a tense Etihad, you could hear the sound of the ball clipping the woodwork.
Minute 85: City want a red card for Thiago
Thiago flies in on De Bruyne and he already has a yellow card, so the Manchester City players want him sent off. But, it’s not even a freekick for the home side. A prior foul against Manchester City is called instead.
Minute 80: Ten minutes to go and City are pushing
It’s Manchester City who are truly pushing for the victory as the clock hits 80 minutes. Liverpool are sitting back and looking to hit on the counter without much success, whereas the home side are launching attack after attack.
Minute 72: Into the side netting by Gabriel Jesus
De Bruyne was in a much better position, but Gabriel Jesus goes for the shot from a wide angle and can only hit the side netting. The Belgian isn’t happy at that wasted chance.
Minute 71: Salah curls one just wide
A Mohamed Salah shot clips Laporte and is flicked just past Ederson’s post. But, Anthony Taylor didn’t see the deflection and gives a goal kick, to the fury of the Liverpool players.
Minute 68: Sterling breaks free, but is quickly caught
De Bruyne plays a ball for Sterling to latch on to, but he isn’t quick enough to play a one-two or to take a shot before a red army of Liverpool players arrive to suffocate the chance.
Minute 63: Sterling scores… but it’s offside!
Raheem Sterling receives the ball and slots past Alisson… but it’s offside by millimetres. The goal is ruled out to the delight of the travelling Liverpool fans. It’s still 2-2.
Minute 60: Van Dijk clears off the line from Gabriel Jesus
Gabriel Jesus remains lively and he manages to work a shooting opportunity, but Virgil van Dijk is there to make a block. It’s still 2-2 and it’s on a knife edge.
Minute 56: City manage to push Liverpool back
We haven’t had a clear chance in the past five minutes, which is unusual in this game, but Manchester City are little by little pushing Liverpool back and getting back on the front foot.
Minute 51: Ederson parries Jota’s effort
It has been all Liverpool to start the second half and the Reds create another good chance, this time for Jota. He gets on the end of a cross, but Ederson intervenes to make a good save.
Minute 46: GOAL!!! MANE EQUALISES STRAIGHT AWAY!!!
Well, that was quite a response from Liverpool! Klopp doesn’t make any substitutions, but the team come out for the second half with a different attitude and Sadio Mane is played in straight away, finishing emphatically.
Half time: Manchester City lead, but could be up by more
Manchester City finish the half as they started it, on the attack. They have a 2-1 lead through Kevin de Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus’ goals, which came either side of one from Diogo Jota, but Pep Guardiola will feel his side should be ahead by more. Let’s see if Jurgen Klopp’s men can get back into this game in the second 45 minutes.
Minute 44: Laporte blocks Jota
Liverpool have a great chance as they look for an equaliser before half time, but Aymeric Laporte does excellently against Diogo Jota and snuffs out the chance.
Minute 41: A spell of possession for Liverpool
Liverpool keep a hold of the ball around halfway, to the sound of whistles from the home crowd. Yet, they can’t quite create a chance with this spell of possession and Manchester City are back on the attack with a chance for Sterling.
Minute 36: GOAL!!! GABRIEL JESUS RETAKES THE LEAD FOR CITY!!!
After Liverpool clear a corner, Gabriel Jesus is the only one of five Manchester City players in the penalty area who isn’t offside when the second cross comes in. He gets on the end of it and skilfully turns it in to make it 2-1 to the home side.
Minute 34: Cancelo hits the side netting
Once again Joao Cancelo gets himself into space down Manchester City’s left. This time he takes a shot himself and it flashes just wide, rippling the side netting.
Minute 29: Just wide from De Bruyne
Not for the first time, there is space in behind Alexander-Arnold and Joao Cancelo is able to get into the Liverpool box. He lays it off to De Bruyne, whose effort trickles just wide.
Minute 23: Ederson almost scores an own goal
Wow, that was close. Ederson’s poor control sees the ball trickle towards the Manchester City goalline. He manages to recover and clear it, avoiding the onrushing Jota, but that was a scary moment for the home crowd.
Minute 21: Manchester City can’t make the most of their corners
Manchester City win a couple of corner kicks, but they can’t make the most of them. Liverpool’s set piece defence is solid and it remains just 1-1 here at the Etihad.
Minute 16: Gabriel Jesus straight into the arms of Alisson
Alisson has to make a save, but it’s a simple one as Gabriel Jesus launches a shot right at the Brazilian goalkeeper. Manchester City are back on the attack, looking to retake the lead.
Minute 13: GOAL!!! JOTA EQUALISES FOR LIVERPOOL!!!
Liverpool are level as Diogo Jota fires in after a neat cutback from Trent Alexander-Arnold. There were many Liverpool bodies in the box for that attack, with the visitors’ ambition paying off. It’s 1-1.
Minute 9: Manchester City want a penalty
There are calls from the home side for a penalty kick, as Gabriel Jesus goes down as he gets in the middle of a mix-up between Alisson and Van Dijk. But, nothing is given and it’s play on.
Minute 7: Play stopped because of a flare
Manchester City attack again, but there’s a flare on the pitch and Anthony Taylor has to stop play while a steward comes on to put it in a bucket of water. That will frustrate Guardiola, as his team were on the march.
Minute 6: GOAL!!! DE BRUYNE WITH THE OPENER!!!
Just moments after that Alisson save, Manchester City take the lead anyway. They take a quick freekick and De Bruyne’s deflected shot from distance bounces in off the post.
Minute 5: Incredible save from Alisson!
It’s Manchester City who have the first big chance of the game, but they can’t take it. An excellent cross is played into the path of Sterling, but Alisson gets out quickly and makes a vital save.
Minute 3: Manchester City struggle to bring the ball out
Liverpool are putting pressure on Manchester City high up the pitch, making it difficult to bring the ball out from the back. The home side almost lose possession inside their own box, but survive that scare.
