Laia Costa: “We are able to show that there is no wrong with what hurts us the most”

Laya Costa (Barcelona, 1985) He has been working in film and television for more than a decade, during which time he has been filming both in Spain and other countries. However, his name has sounded particularly strongly in the past two years. Above all for one reason: both his performance and his personality Five little wolves (2022), Alauda Ruíz de Aza’s first film, made a deep impression on viewers. Winner of a Goya Award for her work in that film, the actress returns with two other characters who are called upon to leave their mark. One is the protagonist one lovea quote from a book Sarah Mesa that just rolled Isabelle Koixet. The other is Irene, a heart the enchantedAnd The movie opens next Friday (June 2). Directed by the Catalan director Elena Trapp (distances), the actress puts herself in the shoes of a young woman, mother of a 4-year-old daughter, who is facing separation.

Q: What tempted you? the enchanted?

R was found. The project came to me in 2020, after the pandemic and after giving birth. It was a call from Elena. I knew her films, and I liked our conversation because she told me that with this she wanted to prove herself, to do something different. I faced the challenge of evolving as a filmmaker. And when a filmmaker shows you something saying they’re getting out of their comfort zone, it’s very hard not to get hooked. Watching the director’s development is a gift, and I feel like I’ve lived with Elena since first contact. I also liked the theme and the final monologue.

Q: It is a film in a way that is based on mystery, so it is not easy to define the topic.

R was found. I think it’s a movie about a wound, a wound that the protagonist hides. Elena’s goal was not to see what was behind that wound, but to get to the bottom of the wound.

Q: The psychological explosion of the protagonist comes at the end, and until then we don’t know for sure what happens to her.

R was found. This was one of the things that interested me most about the project, that the character was built from scratch. Everything is normal, when nothing is actually wrong, nothing is right. I think what happens to Irene, my character, is a very human defense mechanism, an emotional numbing. When the thought occupying our head and body is so aggressive that we push it away and pretend nothing is happening. We are able to show that there is nothing wrong with what hurts us the most.

Q: Until Erin explodes into the lauded final monologue, in which it all makes sense.

R was found. Yes, and we shot in 40 minutes because Elena wanted certain lighting for that scene. It is the time it takes for the sun to set, and it wanted the evening light. So we had 40 minutes to make a consecutive shot and it had to be ejected perfectly. We did three takes, no more. I thought: I will adapt to the camera, the light, what Elena thinks about the narrative, and I will try not to lose the freshness.

Q: After victory (2015), you must be familiar with serial filming…

R was found. Don’t believe it, I’ve always associated the sequence shot with maximum spontaneity, with the character approaching freedom. And here I realized that with Elena it was not like that. in the enchantedAlthough there were very long consecutive shots, everything was flagged. I had to adapt to the camera without losing my cool. And I really liked the challenge.

Q: However, it shouldn’t be easy to escape from that.

R was found. never. While promoting the Five little wolves They asked me a lot about maternity. And it was difficult for me to answer, because I did not want to talk about it. It makes me feel ashamed and it is such a big and complex subject that I felt that by embodying it in my experience I was limiting it. I’m just a woman to talk about. That’s why I’m always a bit defensive and insist on giving my opinions based on the context of the movie. Anyway, it didn’t make me ditch a reporter telling me I actually got my work done from home because I was a mom.
