How many times a day do you look at your mobile phone? Tricks to take back control of notifications | technology

According to an Ikea study, one in three people look at their mobile phone more than 100 times a day Are we overly connected?. That is, once every 10 minutes on average, not counting the hours of sleep. We are bombarded with notifications from WhatsApp, Twitter, Gmail, media or platforms like Spotify and Netflix every day. Users can easily disable these notifications for a certain period or have them not all appear in real time, but rather refresh every few hours. This allows Android and iOS mobile phones to control notifications.

Turn off app notifications

Some people check their phones twice as often as they think, according to research published in the journal PLoS One. Many users probably don’t need to receive notifications for every app on their phones. To deactivate it, you must go to the phone settings, click on the “Notifications” option and on “Application Settings”. Then it is enough to select the applications from which you want to receive notifications and those from which you do not. Note that the process may be slightly different and these options may have different names depending on the phone manufacturer.

Customize the notifications you’ll receive from each “app”

The user can also choose which notifications they will receive within each app. To do this, in Notifications, you have to click on Application Settings and choose a specific one. In Gmail, for example, it is possible to deactivate notifications for a particular email account and leave notifications for another email account activated. On TikTok, notifications for comments, likes, direct messages, or new followers can be turned on or off.

On Facebook, there are also multiple options: from reminders to comments, tags in photos, birthdays, friend requests, people you may know, or pages you follow. This option can come in handy with food delivery apps, those used to order taxis and even banking apps. Thanks to the fact that their notifications are usually arranged by categories, the user can choose whether they want to receive those they consider important and avoid, for example, promotional ads.

Snooze notifications

Also, there is an option to snooze notifications. If you want to activate it, in the Notifications section under Settings you have to tap on Allow snooze. Then, as soon as a notification arrives on the mobile phone, you should drag it slightly to the left or right and touch the clock icon that has the letter “z” inside it. The user can choose to snooze it for 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, or 2 hours.

Reduce interruptions

If you easily get lost every time you go to check the time on your mobile phone, you probably prefer that notifications not appear on the lock screen. In this case, there are two options. On the one hand, go to the Notifications section under Settings and tap on “Notifications on lock screen” and on “Don’t show notifications.” If you want them to appear again later, you must select the option “Show default and silent conversations”.

But perhaps the quickest and most interesting option to focus as much as possible is Do Not Disturb, a way to silence all notifications, except for those from pre-selected people and apps. To select these contacts and applications, you must enter “Settings”, “Notifications” and “Do not interrupt”. The next step is to choose who can be contacted by calls or messages when this mode is activated, which apps can send alerts and whether alarms and other interruptions are allowed.

Although this mode can be activated from Settings, the quickest way to do so is to swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the Do Not Disturb button. The user can choose whether they want to deactivate the mode after a certain number of hours or do it manually. You can also create Schedules so that they are automatically activated under different conditions. For example, in the hours you spend sleeping, during events saved in your calendar or while playing games on your mobile phone.

Turn off app notifications

On iPhones, it is also possible to prevent a specific app from sending notifications. When you enter the settings and click on “Notifications”, a list of all applications installed on the phone appears. Simply tap on a specific option and deactivate the Allow Notifications option. Everyone has an average of 40 apps installed on their phone, according to product engineering firm SimForm. Since you have to look at them one by one, this process may take a few minutes.

Schedule when notifications arrive

Not all notifications require immediate attention. To prevent all applications from jumping in real time, it is possible to activate a function so that they enter the phone at certain times. Under Settings, you have to click on Notifications and Scheduled Summary. By activating this option, it is possible to choose when you want notifications to arrive – for example, nine in the morning, three o’clock and seven in the afternoon – and from which specific applications – for example, from Gmail, Twitter, Instagram– all are listed An app next to the average number of notifications a user receives each day from it.

Activate focus modes

Focus modes in the iPhone are used to avoid persistent notifications and allow filtering based on what the user is doing at all times, according to the Cupertino company. For example, if you are doing sports, resting, playing video games, reading, driving, working or just enjoying your free time.

In the phone settings there is a section called “Focus modes”. By default, there are several created: Do Not Disturb, Rest, Reading, Work and Leisure. By clicking on any of them, you can choose which applications or people you want to receive notifications from when it is activated. It is also possible to specify whether or not you want to receive incoming calls, and if so, from whom – from the whole world, from some allowed people or only from your favorite contacts. Also, the user can allow repeat calls. That is, if the same person calls again in less than three minutes, the call will not be silenced.

If there’s one thing that makes these focus modes unique, it’s that they can be activated automatically based on the time of day, geographic location, or whether you’re using a specific app. For example, a specific mode can be activated from 8 to 12 a.m. Monday through Friday, when you reach a certain address or when you open the Books app.
