FBI investigation report gives Trump more ammunition for 2024

Donald Trump’s campaign to return to the White House in 2024 has some basic lines: The oppression he suffers is the oppression of all Americans by power elite; ‘Election theft’ – not upheld by the courts – in the 2020 election falls within this persecution; The problems in the country – the economy, Ukraine, the borders – would not have happened if they had not taken away the White House.

Within that story, the Special Prosecutor’s Report John Durham Made this week fits the bill. Durham was tasked in 2019 by Trump’s Justice Department — appointed by then-Attorney General William Barr — to review the FBI’s 2016 investigation of the then-Republican nominee’s campaign over his possible links to Russia and his attempt to interfere in that year’s presidential election.

That is, he made a file “Achievement to Achievement”. Four years later, Durham’s conclusions are good news for Trump: the special counsel determined the investigation was “lacking inaccuracy,” based on “raw, unanalyzed and uncorroborated” intelligence reports in which it used double standards with the other White House nominee, Hillary Clinton. .

In his report, Durham is highly critical of the FBI agents’ treatment of the so-called “Steel File”, A series of allegations against Trump were made by former British spy Christopher Steele, which later turned out to be unfounded.

This file was funded indirectly by the Clinton campaign and was one of the reasons for the initiation of the investigation against Trump.

‘Serious lack of accuracy’

The special prosecutor explains that “senior FBI officials demonstrated a serious lack of analytical rigor toward the information they received, particularly information from persons and entities with political connections.” This is what “Partially loosened and installed” The investigation against Trump – the so-called Crossfire Hurricane – which finally led to the appointment of a special prosecutor, Robert Mueller, To investigate Trump, already as president. This investigation, which ended without legal consequences for the now-former president, captured a significant amount of US media attention for a year and a half.

Durham now maintains that the FBI’s initial investigation was “seriously flawed” and ended up damaging the federal agency’s reputation. The FBI, which is critical of the special prosecutor, launched its investigation despite “a complete lack of information from the intelligence community to corroborate the hypothesis on which the Crossfire Hurricane investigation was based” and its agents chose to ignore information that exonerated a suspect in the case or stray from the narrative they were pursuing.

Most of the conclusions of the Durham Report were already known from another 2019 Justice Department document and the special prosecutor has yet to collect large parts of his investigation: Only two people were charged — later found not guilty at trial — and a third, at the very least. Charged, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one year of probation.

That won’t stop Trump from continuing to talk about the issue “crime of the century” And he presented it as great evidence that he was being subjected to a “witch hunt”. And most important for 2024 is to denounce that non-existent electoral theft is a continuation of that oppression and that they will try to repeat it.

“The American public has been deceived, just as it is now being deceived by those who do not want to see America’s greatness,” Trump wrote on his social network, Truth Social. The former president described the incident as “treason”, condemned former FBI director – who fired him – James Comey and demanded Congress, without elaborating.
