Edinson Cavani’s career at Manchester United (MU) seems to be almost at an end. Instead of extending the contract, the 35-year-old is reportedly close to agreeing a move to La Liga club Real Sociedad.
Reporting from Metro, Cavani actually made a brilliant record during his inaugural season at Old Trafford. He managed to score 17 goals after being brought in for free from the French giants, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
However, his positive trend with the Red Devils was broken after he was hit by an injury. A number of supporters are also claimed to have begun to question the Uruguay striker’s commitment to Manchester United.
Cavani’s contract with the Red Devils will expire at the end of this season. Both parties do not seem to have a great desire to extend the veteran player’s stay at Old Trafford.
Cavani was predicted to return to South America after completing his contract with the Red Devils. The reason is, River Plate and Boca Juniors are known to almost get the player’s signature last summer.
The plan was thwarted by former Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He asked Cavani to stay for another 12 months.
However, The Sun reports that Cavani still wants to stay in Europe after parting with United. The former Napoli striker is also claimed to have almost agreed to a move to Real Sociedad.
Edinson Cavani is likely to leave Manchester United alongside Anthony Martial, who is also reportedly getting closer to the Old Trafford exit. Meanwhile, Mason Greenwood’s future remains uncertain.
In the midst of this situation, MU seems to need to try to buy a new striker in the summer transfer window. This is necessary to complete the performance of Cristiano Ronaldo, if the superstar does not join in leaving the Red Devils.
The need for a new striker is also fueled by the potential departure of Marcus Rashford from Old Trafford. The reason, Arsenal are reportedly ready to take a big step to hire the services of the England international.
Rashford is known to be considering his future at Old Trafford. The 24-year-old has been left out of the United squad since the arrivals of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho last summer.
He did not go down as a starter for the Red Devils in the Manchester derby which was held some time ago. This condition makes Rashford only registered 10 appearances as a starter, out of a total of 29 Premier League matches that United have played this season.
Meanwhile, Manchester United’s position in the 2021/2022 Premier League standings continues to decline. The Red Devils are currently in sixth place in the standings with a score of 50 points from 29 matches.
Ralf Rangnick’s squad is four points behind Arsenal in fourth. However, the Red Devils are only one point adrift of Tottenham Hotspur who occupy the top five positions.
Diego Forlan Says MU wasted Edinson Cavani
Former Manchester United (MU) star, Diego Forlan, said the Red Devils team failed to maximize Edinson Cavani.
Forlan believes Cavani can have a much bigger impact at the club.
“He did that last season if you remember. In the end he played a lot of games before the Europa League final and you could see a lot of the people behind him, the players and the way he took the team to the next level.
The 35-year-old striker looks set to leave Old Trafford this summer after two seasons of injury.
Forlan does not believe Cavani was given enough opportunities to shine at United.
“Why? Because he played most of the matches. This season he started the season with an injury and then he didn’t play for one reason or another which I don’t know.
“He never plays two or three games in a row and it’s difficult for a player to perform if he doesn’t have a lot of games,” he said.
Manchester United are also rumored to have found a replacement for Edinson Cavani. The club’s management is monitoring Lyon striker Moussa Dembele.
The French striker has 18 months remaining on his contract at Lyon. The club are ready to listen to offers for him this summer, which will be their last chance to secure a significant fee for the former Celtic star.
Cavani will leave Old Trafford at the end of the season when his contract expires. Manchester United are also likely to lose Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford.
United look unlikely to qualify for the Champions League and therefore they have to be more realistic with who they target in the transfer market.
Therefore, United need at least a replacement for Edinson Cavani who is almost certain to leave Old Trafford, while hoping that Ronaldo and Rashford are not tempted to move clubs.
