Best Tricks to Make the Most of Your Travel GPS | your technology | Country

With eight million trips last year and concentrated in a few days, the Constitution Bridge is one of the busiest moments in terms of traffic. Concentration of vehicles which can trap drivers in nerve centers, but this can be mitigated if a connected GPS navigator is used.

GPS navigation applications have a primary task: to get the driver from point A to point B, in the shortest possible time (this is how most browsers are configured by default). However, these high-end apps have more features that can make the journey more efficient.

Plan the trip in advance

In general, we are used to entering the destination of the trip already sitting in the car with a seat belt; There is nothing wrong with that, but it is not the most effective solution. For any reason? Traffic flows do not vary much along the routes, so big data makes it possible to know in advance and with a small margin of error what is the best time to leave.

In this way, the navigation application can be indicated on the previous day which will be the destination of our trip and the approximate time of departure. What do you get with this? The navigation app will display the busiest hour based on the traffic history for that route taking into account the time. In this way, the system will display the best moments to start the path and those to avoid. To set your departure time, simply indicate it at the time you know the route (in Google Maps and Apple Maps), or in the “My Waze” section of Waze.

fuel saving

With the skyrocketing rise in gasoline, more and more drivers are choosing the cheapest route as an alternative to the fastest; In fact, they can only be a few minutes apart from each other, but the economic difference is significant. To do this, applications such as Google Maps have a specific function that precisely searches for the most economical route in terms of consumption.

This new option – available when selecting a route – takes into account variables such as distance in kilometers, elevations, and even the type of vehicle to be driven (a hybrid car is not the same as a diesel), to calculate a route more efficiently. Google explains in its blog that a few extra minutes of driving can lead to very significant savings in consumption, and the truth is that the highway is not always the best way to get from one point to another.

Dodge traffic jams

It is one of the functions that bring the greatest added value to the user, that is, the connected applications allow to know the real-time traffic density at a given moment. This makes it easier for the algorithms to make real-time calculations (to the point of adjusting the route, once you’re driving), and in this way we ensure that we get to our destination in the shortest possible time.

This function is particularly interesting in an urban environment, where retention can hang us in a matter of seconds. How do navigation applications know the real-time traffic situation? The bulk of navigation applications use common (usually official) traffic sources, but also traffic generated by mobile devices.

It is not necessary to open a navigation application to “report”: mobile phones send their locations to the servers (both Google and Apple), unless the user asks not to do so. With this information, the algorithms calculate the average speed, and it is part of the information that, together with the traffic history, makes it possible to report with great accuracy the retention and recalculation of the route.

Avoid potential speeding tickets

Respecting speed limits is essential for safe driving, but on many occasions and on unfamiliar roads we can get confused and cross these limits. In this sense, some navigation applications have audible warnings that are activated as soon as the vehicle exceeds the maximum permitted speed.

The mapping in which the various GPS navigation applications operate, has speed limits for each route it is traversed on, for which the user only has to activate the said warnings. In Waze and Google Maps (Android), just tap My Waze / Settings / Speedometer, and activate the alert; Apple Maps doesn’t alert you to speed, but it does display the speed limit on screen.

Learn about the special conditions of the destination

When traveling to an unfamiliar place, everything is new, and this is especially important when it comes to parking. In this sense, it is advisable to observe by satellite view how to get to the parking lot, or whether there is a parking area in the area.

explains Riccardo Colotto, expert Taxi On Twitter, “I’m using it to see if I can get in with the truck.” This very simple trick consists of entering the destination address and applying a satellite view to analyze arrivals, parking and other conditions that may disturb the driver at the time of arrival.

Download maps on mobile

Depending on the destination and coverage, it may happen that the navigation application cannot access the maps at any time. To avoid this stressful situation, it is best to download the destination area to your mobile phone, so that you always have the possibility to drive with directions (albeit without traffic information).

Google Maps allows you to download certain areas to the device, and it also alerts us when it considers that said map may be out of date. To do this, just click on the user icon in the upper right, go to Offline Maps and select the area to download.
