Antonio Rudiger's agent holds talks with Barcelona boss

La Liga giants Barcelona have reportedly held talks to sign Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger on a free transfer next summer.

Reporting from Metro, the meeting between Rudiger’s agent – Sahr Senesie – with Barca Director of Football Mateu Alemany and Jordi Cruyff was reportedly held on Wednesday (30/3/2022) evening local time at a hotel in Barcelona.

Sky Germany’s report claims that Senesia spent approximately three hours discussing with Blaugrana officials. They just left the hotel when it was almost midnight.

As is well known, Rudiger will spend his contract with Chelsea at the end of the season. The Champions League champions can no longer offer a new contract, following the sanctions imposed by the British government on Roman Abramovich.

According to Metro, Chelsea actually had made an offer to extend Rudiger’s stay at Stamford Bridge. However, the German player rejected Chelsea’s efforts. He remained unmoved when given a deal worth nearly £200,000-a-week.

Antonio Rudiger is one of Chelsea’s mainstay players. Since playing with the Blues in 2017, the former AS Roma player has transformed into a key player in Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

He is considered to have an important role at the back, to successfully lead the Blues to lift the Champions League trophy last season. Rudiger’s departure from Stamford Bridge will inevitably cause a big loss for Chelsea.

Thomas Tuchel had made it clear that he wanted Rudiger to remain at the Blues before the British government’s ban. However, the club has so far been unable to reach a new agreement with the player.

Not only Rudiger, Chelsea also seems to have to prepare to release Andreas Christensen at the end of the season. The reason, Metro said that Barcelona had reached an agreement to bring in the Danish international player.

The Catalan giants have reportedly agreed to sign AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie. The 25-year-old player is known to be spending his contract with the Rossoneri at the end of the season.

“We have completed two signings for next season. One is a midfielder, the other is a central defender,” said Barcelona president Joan Laporta regarding the progress of his club’s transfer last week.

Chelsea situation
Meanwhile, Chelsea is currently in a bad situation. His boss, Roman Abramovich, was sanctioned by the British government following the Russo-Ukrainian conflict. The Russian tycoon’s assets were frozen because he was considered to have close ties to Vladimir Putin.

The club, which is currently in third place in the Premier League standings, is in danger of falling into poverty. The Blues can’t sell official club souvenirs. They are also prohibited from marketing home match tickets, as well as buying or extending player contracts.

Antonio Rudiger is one of the 4 defenders on a free transfer this summer

Free transfers are a great way to improve your squad without spending a lot of money. Not a few popular football clubs got windfall after recruiting free agent players in the transfer window.

World-class footballers usually need to be brought in at a fantastic cost. However, it is possible for the club to bring in new players for free because they have run out of contracts.

Football clubs will generally evaluate the player’s needs ahead of the transfer window. Some clubs like to bring in new strikers to increase goal productivity. On the other hand, there are also those who are interested in recruiting defenders to strengthen their squad’s defense line.

Launching Sportskeeda, defenders are indeed the backbone of the team’s success in football. Despite having a slick attack, the squad must still have a strong defense line in order to maintain the advantage.

While many teams are willing to spend huge sums of money to sign top defenders, there are also defenders who are available for free and have the potential to make a significant impact on the club. Thiago Silva is one such example.

The Brazilian defender was brought to Chelsea as a free player in 2020. Despite his relatively senior age, Thiago Silva managed to make an important contribution to the Blues back line and helped the team lift the Champions League trophy last season.

Like Thiago Silva at that time, here are four top defenders who have the potential to have a free transfer status at the end of the season, as quoted from Sportskeeda.

Antonio Rudiger
Antonio Rudiger is a tough defender that Chelsea currently has. Along with Thiago Silva, the Jermain international has become one of the best defenders under Thomas Tuchel.

He is reportedly reluctant to sign a contract extension with the West London-based club. Judging by his appearance and market value, Rudiger is likely to be one of the most sensational free signings in the summer transfer window.

Andreas Christensen
In addition to losing Antonio Rudiger, Chelsea must also be prepared to release Andreas Christensen who is likely to leave for free at the end of the season. The Denmark international has been in and out of the Blues starting XI over the last few years.

However, it is not influenced by Christensen’s capabilities, but the depth of the Chelsea squad. According to Sportskeeda, Christensen has spent nearly a decade at Stamford Bridge. He was first promoted from the youth team in 2013.

Christensen also showed impressive performances while on loan at Borussia Monchengladbach in the 2015–2017 period. With Chelsea, the 25-year-old has made 155 appearances in all competitions and won six titles, including the Champions League trophy last season.

Matthias Ginter
Matthias Ginter is a 28-year-old player who started his career at SC Freiburg and Borussia Dortmund, before sealing a move to Borussia Monchengladbach in 2017. His current contract expires at the end of the season.

According to Sportskeeda, Ginter has confirmed that he will not be extending his stay at Gladbach in the summer. The German player is predicted to be the subject of interest from a number of foreign clubs and Bundesliga clubs.

Ginter still has many years left in his career. With qualified experience at club level and international level, Ginter is believed to be a valuable player who can be brought in for free in the summer transfer window.

James Tarkowski
According to Sportskeeda, James Tarkowski is the main reason Burnley have been able to maintain their status as a Premier League club over the last few years. Together with Ben Mee and Nich Pope, he succeeded in forming a solid defense that became the foundation of the strength of Sean Dyche’s squad.

Unfortunately, Burnley have only won three games this season. This situation makes the Clarets facing the threat of relegation after six years of surviving in the top caste of the Premier League.

This situation could be the right time for Tarkowski to seek a challenge at a new club. Moreover, his contract with Burnley will indeed expire at the end of the season. With a total of 209 games that he has played with the Clarets, Tarkowski is believed to be able to attract the interest of mid-table and top clubs in the Premier League.
